Saving Lives, One Pet at a Time

The Friends of the St. Johns County Pet Center is an all-volunteer based non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization.  We are dedicated to aid and support our local homeless and abandoned animals temporarily housed at our local St. Johns County shelter, the Pet Center.  The Pet Center serves all of St. Johns County and is our only local County-run shelter.

The primary goals of the Friends is to promote the shelter and aid in the adoption of the animals through special events, public outreach, and various programs including adoption sponsorships.  We also strive to enrich the lives of the animals while they are housed at the shelter through various programs.

Success Stories

Kiwi the cat
Kiwi

Kiwi’s mom told her boyfriend that if a cat “chose” him, we would bring them home and Kiwi sure did. After the nice employee helping us said “wow she came down twice, she never does that” they knew it was all over. Kiwi has only been in her home a few months but she is fitting in so well. Some of her favorite things include her nighttime zoomies, chest scratches, nibbling on my friends, drinking out of her water goblet, teasing my dog, and licking cast irons clean. It has been so much fun.

Kiwi’s family says she is the best cat they could have asked for!

Tank the dog
Tank

Tank was adopted on January 9th of this year. Tank’s Mom says adopting him is one of best things ever. Tank has brought so much joy and goofiness that every time she sees him she can’t help but smile and laugh. Tank loves tummy rubs and naptime with his pawrents. He is adapting well to his new home and enjoying his best life. His family even made him an instagram to showcase his goofy self!

Pixi the dog
Pixi

Pixie’s family writes “We were inspired to adopt a dog (specifically a dog that may not easily get adopted) when we heard the sad story of a dog named Nala.  Nala was adopted under false information, possibly with not good intentions and ended up killed rather than returned to a rescue.  Very tragic and unnecessary ending for a loveable dog.

We adopted Pixie who is a boxer/pit mix.  Pixie was at PetSmart trying to find a family.  She was heart worm positive,  owner surrender and needed training.   Pixie is now heartworm free, lives with four cats, plays at doggie day camp and lives with and loves a 9 week old baby.

Pixie hangs out with her Mom most of the day while Mom works from home.   She chills out until exactly 5 pm and then wants to play.  She is beyond excited when the Dad gets home from work!

Pixie’s favorite things:
– chase her squeaky tennis ball in the backyard.
-show off her smile
-greet and give kisses to visitors
-cuddle on the couch
-wrestle

Gracie the cat
Gracie

Gracies’s Mom told us “I brought home kitty #14647 with no name in November of 2013 and promptly named her Gracie. She has been a wonderful addition to my family! As it turns out, I kind of feel like she is ME personified in a cat! She is chill, LOVES to play, loves to lie in the sun on the lanai, loves to watch the birds and loves my undivided attention for ear and tail rubs (for about 10 minutes an hour and then she is back to doing her thing). When the garage door opens signaling my return home, she is in the window watching and waiting for me! She constantly has me laughing and is a source of comfort when I need that too! I love this little nugget of fur!!”

Cinderella the dog
Cinderella

Cinderella’s Mom and Dad lost their beloved pit bull to cancer in October of 2019.  Before too long they knew they their hearts were ready for another fur baby.  After visiting multiple shelters, they came to the Pet Center and there they met a dog named “Coquina”.

Coquina was completely shut down in the shelter.  All she wanted to do was to lay in her kennel.  But a volunteer said that if you picked her up and took her outside, she would open up and let her personality come thru.  This turned out to be true and out in the play yard Coquina began to explore.

Due to inbreeding, Coquina was born with a deformed spine, a stubby little tail that she can’t move, and a painful inverted eyelid.  She was also heartworm positive.  It didn’t take long for the adopters to realize that Coquina needed them, and they needed her.

Taking her home, they decided on the name “Cinderella” because she was about to be a rags to riches story!

It took a few days for Cinderella to decompress, but day by day you could see her opening up and relaxing.  On day 1, she had to be carried inside and out because she was terrified of everything.  Within a few days, Cinderella was running and playing with her sister and she became the Queen of the couch when she wanted to relax!

After being treated for the heartworms, Cinderella had successful surgery to correct the inverted eyelid and save her vision in that eye.

Today, Cinderella is still a couch potato, but she is also goofy, loving, and friendly to everyone she meets. Cinderella has brought much joy to her family’s life!
